Sitka center for art and ecology
Using the infamous Brementown animals as a jumping off point, you will carve 3 or more basswood animals and join them into your own story. This class is for beginners as well as intermediate woodcarvers. An orientation to basic carving techniques, sharpening, and quick set glues will be provided.
An emphasis on flexibility in relating to how your sculpture and story evolves is what makes this FUN. You may start carving a frog, and it might become a beaver or a bird. Sculpture stacks will be finished with milk paints.
About the Instructor(s)
Stan Peterson’s approach to teaching is individualized to the skill level and interest of the students. He assists each person in finding their own voice through making art. He has taught drawing, relief printmaking, and woodcarving for more than twenty-five years to a wide variety of emerging and mid-career artists. He believes storytelling, humor, and a traveled perspective from visiting carvers in Santa Fe, Oaxaca, and Bali inform the ways we sit down together with a piece of wood, some sharp tools, and a few hours.
